The Rise of the Hugenots Vol 1 of 2 Henry Martyn Baird 9781444458053 Books
This classic work by Baird could well be called "Everything You Wanted to Know About the Hugenots and More." Written in an easy-to-understand style it provides a comprehensive description of this brave band of Protestants who endured persecution and martyrdom for the sake of their understanding of the Gospel. Prior to reading this book my main exposure to the Hugenots was through brief encounters in general histories of the Reformation. Sometimes overlooked in such histories (which tend to focus in greater detail on Luther, Zwingli, and even the Anabaptists), "The Rise of the Hugenots" provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes description of the interaction between the many characters in this drama--the prelates of the Roman church, the faculty of the Sorbonne, the kings of France (Francis I, Henry II, Francis II, Charles, etc.), Catherine de Medici, and, of course, the leaders of the Hugenots themselves. I have come away from reading this book with a far greater appreciation of the Reformation in France. I look forward to reading Volume 2.Product details

Volume I reads more like a book of footnotes to a previously written work (or is that Vol. II? Also, I would enjoy the book more if so much of it weren't in French or Latin
